50. God resides in all

Our Saint Thirumoolar sings in this poem about the nature of God. God is not present for atheists. God exists for theists. those who melt with love for God, can have his vision. 

இல்லனும் அல்லன் உளன் அல்லன் எம்இறை

எம் இறை – God who is eternal; இல்லனும் அல்லன் – even if we are not able to see Him, or even if we deny His existence, he does not become non-existing. உளன் அல்லன் – He is indeed not present for those who do not have devotion or have not yet gained wisdom.

Our Saint Thirumoolar uses the word “உளன்” to describe the experience of those who did not have God’s vision. உளன் அல்லன் – even though we had not yet received his vision, that does not mean that He does not exist. God’s divine qualities remain unchanged.

Next, our Saint Thirumoolar explains the method to have God’s vision.

கல்லது நெஞ்சம் பிளந்திடும் காட்சியன்

கல்லது நெஞ்சம் – our heart that is like a stone (as it is without love); பிளந்திடும் காட்சியன் – once the heart melts with love then God appears there!

Once God’s bestows His blessings, He will also break open our heart that is like a stone and grant us His vision.  God’s blessings is the reason for having His vision. To emphasize the effect of God’s blessings, our Saint Thirumoolar uses the word “பிளந்திடும் காட்சியன்”. 

தொல்லையன் தூயன் துளக்கிலன் தூய்மணி

தொல்லையன் – the primordial principle (god); தூயன் – pure and unsullied principle (god); துளக்கிலன் – changeless (God); தூய்மணி – blemishless gem (god); 

சொல்லரும் சோதி தொடர்ந்துநின் றானே. 

 

சொல்லரும் சோதி – the effulgent divine who is indescribable;  தொடர்ந்து நின்றானே – God is constantly residing in the hearts of the beings to bestow his grace lovingly. 

இல்லனும் அல்லன் உளன் அல்லன் எம்இறை

கல்லது நெஞ்சம் பிளந்திடும் காட்சியன்

தொல்லையன் தூயன் துளக்கிலன் தூய்மணி

சொல்லரும் சோதி தொடர்ந்துநின் றானே.  34 

In the next poem, our Saint Thirumoolar sings that God is unlimited in energy, who is without any blemish, who is above all in merits! Yet, God lovingly chooses to occupy the heart of simple perishable human body!

ஏனோர் பெருமையன் ஆகிலும் எம்இறை

ஏனோர் பெருமையன் ஆகிலும் -= though God is always greater than any worldly person; 

 

ஊனே சிறுமையுள் உட்கலந்து அங்குளன்

ஊனே சிறுமையுள் – in this simple human body; that is in this perishable human body;  உட்கலந்து – entering the body; அங்குளன் – resides in the heart.

வானோர் அறியும் அளவல்லன் மாதேவன்

மாதேவன் – God (siva); வானோர் – deities and angels; அறியும் அளவல்லன் – God is beyond the intellectual pursuit; 

தானே அறியும் தவத்தின் அளவே

தானே – every individual with own effort. 

Each individual can experience God and have His vision that is equivalent to their own efforts. 

ஏனோர் பெருமையன் ஆகிலும் எம்இறை

ஊனே சிறுமையுள் உட்கலந்து அங்குளன்

வானோர் அறியும் அளவல்லன் மாதேவன்

தானே அறியும் தவத்தின் அளவே.  43
