45. Experiencing Eternal Happiness

Our Saint Thirumoolar sings in this poem the experience of those enlightened persons who have managed to control their five senses and remain in oneness with the divine in bliss. We call those persons “those who have merged or reached”  Our Saint Thirumoolar has dedicated several poems in his book in praise of those who have “reached” this state. He sings about their state of “oneness with divine”.

ஒழிந்தேன் பிறவி – As I have been fortunate to receive the blessings of God, I have also escaped from the need to be born again and experience the worldly joys and sorrows; உறவென்னும் பாசம் கழிந்தேன் – I have also become fortunate to untangle myself from the desire and worldly bonds of son, wife and relatives.

I have now become one with God.

Our Saint Thirumoolar explains in this line that he has understood that there is no difference between God and himeslf. He uses the singular (ஒன்றானேன்) form to describe that he became one with God, instead using plural – which is his subtle way for describe that God is indeed One. He also further emphasizes that God does not have to change; it is the human being who has to change to become one with divine! Therefore, he uses the word ஒன்றானேன்!

அழிந்து – after death; ஆங்கு – after that; இனிவரும் ஆக்கமும் – to be born again in this world, even if it were a birth as a highly sacred person; வேண்டேன் – I do not want that!

சார்பு – merging; செழுஞ்சார்பு – merging in ecstatic bliss; செழுஞ்சார்புடைய  - God (Siva) who lovingly envelopes us in ecstatic bliss; சிவனைக் கண் டேனே – I was able to hold on to God (Siva).  Here our Saint Thirumoolar uses  கண்டேனே with the letter ஏ reaffirming his joy while stating this!
