How the senses come under control Once devotion to the teacher and wisdom have occurred, what benefits do they cause ? தானே புலன்ஐந்துந் தன்வசம் ஆயிடும் தானே – automatically without external help. Our Saint Thirumoolar assures that “If you constantly see, chant, listen, and contemplate on the lord who is our teacher, and more importantly if you treat your teacher as the lord himself, then all the five senses will on their own be under your control.”     தானே புலன்ஐந்துந் தன்வசம் போயிடும் The five senses which have now come under the control of the individual soul, will no onwards follow the the path of the individual soul.   One scholar said that it is like how an elephant obediently follows the path of the mahout. In the Upanishads, the senses are compared to the horses, and say that a good driver will guide them with contr...

12-1. Vision of the Divine Teacher

Teachings to treasure, teachings that transform.  Thirumoolar Thavamozhi Motivation   12-1. Vision of the Divine Teacher     In our religious text, the basic policy is that lord comes down as a teacher and feeds us the wisdom. This is also the basis for worshipping the monk (acharya) of the mutt as the lord and using his guidance as the key open the lock to get wisdom. Our Saint nicely clarifies this truth.   The training to get wisdom is to learn to see (or watch) the lord who comes in the form of a teacher to shower his grace. Then say the name of the teacher, to listen to the teacher’s words, and to keep the teacher’s form always in our meditation – all these are ways to get the true wisdom. Our Saint sings this so nicely.   In this song, the word தெளிவு refers to that wisdom. That word also applies to the ways to acquire that wisdom.   தெளிவு குருவின் திருமேனி காண்டல் தெளிவு குருவின் திருநாமஞ் செப்பல் தெளிவு கு...

Teachings to treasure, teachings that transform.  Thirumoolar Thavamozhi Motivation     11. Lord's Grace is like the Sun's rays   Our Saint Thirumoolar has learned and mastered many forms of science and arts. He is proficient in medicine, chemistry, physics, astronomy, and others. His poems comprise words that   are within the reach of common people. But the wisdom that he shares based on his personal experience are often beyond common man’s knowledge. We can see the astonishing flavor these in several places in our Saint’s works. To share principles that are beyond common person’s knowledge or intellect, our Saint will point as examples facts that are detectable with common person’s knowledge. The sun stone is like a magnifying glass. When we keep this stone above a piece of cotton and pass sun light through the stone, the cotton will catch fire.   The sun stone has the capability to gather sun’s rays. Cotton has the ability to...

Teachings to treasure, teachings that transform.  Thirumoolar Thavamozhi Motivation   10. The three Ps that are eternal   Our sages have nicely analyzed the beings in this world, their properties, quality of the divine in detail and they classified these into three things. They have declared that all these three don't have either a beginning or an end. We could them the three Ps. These are three Ps are the master (Pathi), the beings (Pasu), and the attachment (Pasam) or connection between the master and the individual. We may also call the attachment as devotion. When talking about these three things our sages and the sacred vedic texts call them as the three sacred truths, and they explain about them in detail. Our saint Thirumoolar also talks about these three very nicely in his poems . The Lord is the master. The beings are human beings and the animals each having a life force within. The attachment between the beings and the lord is like a bind. ...

9. Three categories of persons

Image
Teachings to treasure, teachings that transform.  Thirumoolar Thavamozhi Motivation 9. Three categories of persons Our elders group human beings in three categories.  For each of the three categories of people, our lord showers his blessings in three different ways. He grants knowledge of the blissful awareness as per the evolution of that category of persons. Category 1: Ordinary persons who are typically in a normal state of evolution are called "Sakalar" (common). They are fully enveloped by the three layers of dirt, "ego", "karma", and "illusion". For this group of devotees who are in this common state, our lord reincarnates in human form as their guru and teaches them the knowledge of the divine -wisdom. What this means is that for ordinary persons, those teachers who are born to teach them that will help remove the three dirts in them are all embodiment of the divine himself. Category 2: The second category of the persons ar...

Teachings to treasure, teachings that transform.  Thirumoolar Thavamozhi Motivation 8-2. Nine Sacred Techniques taught by Saint Thirumoolar  To share with others the divine bliss that he experienced, our Saint shares with us several sacred techniques. These  are grouped into nine secret techniques. Our elders say that these nine techniques may be considered the essence of the vedic texts. In the Sanskrit text, these techniques are called "tantra". The revelation of a tantra is also traditionally called "tantra reincarnation". The first section of the tantra is sermon (in Sanskrit upadesam). In Sanskrit, upadesam means to "be near someone and make the person aware". As per the evolution of each individual the lord stays near us and make us aware of his bliss. this is the true meaning if this section.

8-1. Life Story of Thirumoolar

Teachings to treasure, teachings that transform.  Thirumoolar Thavamozhi Motivation   8-1. Life Story of Thirumoolar The words of our Saint Thirumoolar originate from the depths of his penance. For 3000 years he did penance under the Pipal tree, and composed one song per year. That is how he blessed us with 3000 songs, say our histories about him. In the Periya puranam, the life story of our Saint Thirumoolar is mentioned. In the mount kailash, one of the saints who had received immense blessings of Lord siva, decided to come down to South of India towards the Pothigai hills to meet his long time friend sage Agastya. On his way he visited several holy places,  went to Thiruvaturai where he had darshan of lord Siva,  and came to a small place called Sathanoor. At that place, he found in a grass field a herd of cows crying. He went near the cows and noticed that the cowherd was lifeless.  The cows that were unable to speak were smelling the cowh...
